Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

October 26, 2010| Legion of Skills

Should Christians celebrate Halloween? the answer to this question may be obvious to some, but believe it or not most Christians do not know or don’t care to know about the history behind this much celebrated day. Halloween is celebrated around the world when people dress up in costumes, collect candy from neighbors and have parties, but do we ever take time to think about the origins of Halloween? Most people don’t think twice about participating in it saying “It’s all in fun” or “Its not evil to me”, but is this so called hallow evening really so innocent? Christians are called to be set apart from the practices of the world, especially those with an history of the occult. Watch this intriguing video that shed some light on the practices and history of…Halloween!

Relevant scripture on the issue of Halloween and Christians:

“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination [detestable] to the LORD…” -Deuteronomy 18:9-12a

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12,

Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. Ephesians 5:11-12

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 1 Timothy 4:1

But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Matthew 18:6

    please consider this verse

Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]:

That is a great verse Frank, in terms of judgment against each other for the things we celebrate. It is up to each person to decide what he or she should celebrate, I think Paul says it quite good in Romans 14

“One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” Romans 14:5-8

There is a lot to say about not judging others in scripture. Many Christians look at the issue of Halloween in different ways, some celebrate, some don’t, some find great alternatives, like your Church’s Family Fun Night, some have praying meetings and wage warfare against the devil on that night.

Halloween is also a perfect time to witness to our neighbors. It is one of the only night of the year that our neighbors come to our doors, what an opportunity to share the Gospel. At the same time we must respect those who decide not to celebrate or give the day any kind of significance.

@ Frank B., that’s a good alternative – I saw this video on Facebook and commented that we should be praying on that night, I like your alternative also because souls are being resurrected 🙂

I think there are alternatives and “alternatives” – I remember when I was younger, the church I attended allowed us to build a fun little haunted house on the church premisses for approximately three years in a row. It was free to everyone to enter and be scared out of their minds, but, looking back, there was nothing Godly about it, nothing educational and nothing that could save a life from sin – basically it was evil and useless. I can say that because, I was one of the kids that helped to build it. Was it fun? yes, but what is fun if it’s not in Christ and if it does not edify us into a saving grace of God and His Son, Jesus Christ? So, I look back at that and say it was a waste of time and was no good to our spirits.

So are alternatives ok, yes, but not “alternatives”. Halloween is just blatantly pagan – we must be careful as to why we have an alternative and what’s the end result. I’ve heard some crazy excuses over the years from fellow Christians.

    Eg.
    – The kids will feel left out. My question, left out of what?

Our Church has alternative to Halloween We call it Family Fun Night and we give out Candy and have booths for the Kids and a puppet show giving the good news of Christ. Last year 30 kids gave there life to Christ. in L.A. The author of the Video say we should not substitute Halloween. Paul says I’m all thing to all men- and I would agree.

    Thank you

This is a legalistic video, Should we now try to perfect our faith though flesh with rules and regulations? the Jehovahs Witnesses, don’t celebrate birthdays, halloween, or Christmas and Seventh-day Adventist try to keep the Sabbath showing their righteousness through the Law.

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Rom 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, [was] not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness [come] by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

I think this is a great video, it really opens ones understanding to where some of these practices come from and why “as Christians” we should not be involved with them. Why do you call this a legalistic video?!? (over-emphasis on discipline of conduct, or legal ideas)

Is the author of the video laying down some kind of rule with ignorance of the grace of God? No!

The video is basically giving us knowledge of the history of Halloween and give us reasons why we should not be involved in such practices. The video did not say or imply that if you do not practice Halloween that you are now more righteous than your fellow Christian brothers and sisters, we must keep the authors argument in context of what he is saying….basically we should as Christians remain separate from pagan practices, which Halloween is clearly, clearly pagan.

I would go on to say that I agree with the scriptures you gave about Grace and that we are not saved by the law, only Grace, the Bible agrees with that totally and so do I, at the same time Grace does not give us the right to practice the things that pagans do, so we must keep what the author is saying in context.

Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

Thanks Grapixia, the video from my point of view is not meant to imprison us but to free us, with knowledge we can make wise decisions in our walk with Christ and escape the snares of the devil, which are numerous, and goes beyond not celebrating Halloween, Birthdays, Sabbath, etc, etc.

“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge….” Hosea 4:6

The thing is that Grace is a free gift, but as you say, not a free gift to continue in sin.

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Romans 6:1-2

As Christians we have to decide upon the Word of God (NOT THE WORD OF MAN) what we should and should not do, we each have to decide for ourselves. I use to do the Halloween celebrations, go out give a lot of trouble, get wasted etc, etc. but we must strive to feed upon the Word and what God is trying to do in our lives and as you said, not practicing this or that is not going to make us better than other Christians, because our righteousness is like filth before the Lord and even if we were truly to do everything right, we would end up with a heart full of pride, so ultimately we would still be full of sin and dirt inside our hearts.
