I use the DVD cover of “Romeo Must Die” , a movie released in 2000, for illustrating the sacrificial love of God. In the movie, an avenging cop seeks out his brother’s killer and falls for the daughter of a businessman who is involved in a money-deal with his father. This was a classic death for love and honor movie. In Jesus’ case, His story is unique. He avenged the wrong Satan did to mankind by giving up His life for us.
The fact that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), meant that only someone perfect and without sin could die and be relieved from that death status. Jesus is the only one that could accomplish that task (Philippians 2:6 – Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:), therefore the title, “Jesus Must Die”.
In the end of the movie, Romeo Must Die, the enemy of Romeo died in a dramatic bloody battle amongst fire and Romeo was the victor. In Jesus’ case, He actually went straight to death, death on the cross.
He fulfilled His purpose for us even though He was tempted to forsake us. Jesus did not fight a bloody dramatic battle amongst fire for us, but he laid down His life in the enemies hand (our hand and Lucifer’s hand) and died the cruelest death known to mankind, so that we could live and have it more abundantly. In the end He won, because He not only had the power to lay down His life, He could raise it up from the dead. Therefore, in three days Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by more than 5,000 people and His disciples in flesh and blood, He even ate food with His disciples.
“But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.”. John 12:23-33
Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross: “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.†Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.†Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.†Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.†This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
“Flipping the script”, It is promised by Jesus that His enemies will burn in fire. Can we trust that promise? Yes. It was foretold back in the book of Genesis that Jesus would come and redeem us and He did come. We can believe everything which concerns God. This is why..
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
If you are an enemy of God – He will not be slack concerning His promise for you and the same goes for those that listen to His call and humbly obey Him by believing on His name.
“Jesus Must Die”, is a statement of assurance in something already accomplished; the battle is won against the ruler of this world (even though the war still rages). It is also a statement for reflection, repentance, dedication and re dedication – what are we doing with what God has done for us? Are we trampling on what He has done for us and treating it as garbage? What are you doing with what Jesus did for you. Where will you end up when He decides to “roll credits”

Thanks gjava and the comments in the article are noted, although I am not in agreement with everything it implies. I think we have too much of a broad spectrum of Christian artist for it to apply as a litmus test for the entire christian art community. I do see implications when gauged against the art in this post though and yes, some of our communities art 🙂 I will bear it in mind.
I saw these videos a few month ago which gives a totally different point of view than the USA Today article. The series, What is Design by Mirificam Press, basically outlines how the biblical world view has a stronger influence on design than any other world view. It’s a two part series very good.

Dig the Art + Christian + “Colouring Outside the Lines” approach to your blog.
Like your take on the “Romeo Must Die” idea, too.
However, (and gently pointed out), an artist as creative, original, and as inspired as you seem to be, might benefit from this commentary on a USA TODAY article: http://www.philcooke.com/creative_reformation
Meanwhile, best to you 😉

Love your poster and the way you connect the movie with the scripture.
Glad you were blessed by that Lunan. Fortunately we have a way out and that is what most of us forget – we sometime only think of God’s love in a romanticized way (in an idealized or unrealistic fashion) and forget about the Holy God which stand at our door and knock, begging , begging to be accepted and trusted with our lives.
