Bold, quirky and free for download – Blow Brush is a hand written font inspired by the hip hop culture and graffiti community. I created Cavorting to test out Type 3.2, software for font creation and editing. There’s a free demo version if you want to try it — it has the most intuitive pen tool of any of the font software options I’ve tried.
This is a one-day font: I created the letterforms and did all the spacing and kerning in one day. That means that there are probably some kerning pairs that aren’t included, and some things might be a little off. But during that one day I did quite a few usability tests, and it looks good.
As always, I’d love to see what you do with it. If you use it in a project, drop me a line! – Missy Meyer
The process of teaching myself fontmaking continues! This time I’ve created my first script font with connections, using two weights of brushes in Adobe Illustrator. (Not all of the connections are perfect, but I’ve kerned quite a bit in here. Those fonts with perfect seamless connections? AMAZING. They must take epic amounts of time to create.)
I’d love to see what you use it in, so feel free to drop me a line with a link to your project! – Missy Meyer
With every font, I learn something new. This time around, I did my first ligatures. I’ve included the 15 lowercase letter pairs I thought were most common. (I skipped over “uu,” because I don’t know about you, but I don’t type “vacuum” all that often.) (Note: I hadn’t included “cc” originally. But the more I thought about it, the more words I thought of with that double-c in them. So I added “cc” to the mix.)
This was also my first attempt at creating the letters in Photoshop, instead of in Illustrator. Still not sure which one I’ll settle on; more testing is required.
I’ve also added in a few little extras in the Private Use Area. – Missy Meyer
Trying out more things, making more fonts. Like you do. Created in one day while I learned more aspects of type creation. – Missy Meyer
The other day, we were shopping at a Trader Joe’s, and I admired all of the hand-done signs in the store. Not just the big chalkboard pieces, but every small sign under every single product with the name and the price. So I made a note on my list of fonts that would be fun to make: grocery sign font.
(Did you know that each Trader Joe’s store has a sign artist? Or more than one? That would be a really cool job. But if I worked at Trader Joe’s, I’d be eating that half-popped popcorn every single day. That stuff is my Kryptonite.)
Anyhoo, here’s my grocery font. For the technically-minded, I made the characters in Illustrator using a calligraphic brush (-16Ă° angle, 40% round). I re-used some strokes across the font for a little more uniformity than I usually get in my handwritten fonts.
I’ve also used the Private Use Area for the first time. And it won’t be the last! It’s fun to make up my own characters. As always: free for personal and commercial use! And I’d love to see how you use this, so feel free to drop me a line! – Missy Meyer
